TURNTABLE LAB

OHM Records are offering two types of Workshops, for both DJing and Music Production. The DJ workshop consists of 10 weeks, with one lesson per week in which a new subject will be introduced in each lesson. As well as one lesson per week, there is also an optional chance of one practice session per week giving students the opportunity to practice what they have learnt in their lessons with out having to buy their own equipment. Through out the course, every aspect of DJing will be covered, giving the student the option to chose which aspect they would like to focus on.

The Production Workshop takes place twice a week, and again lasts for the duration of 10 weeks. The workshop focuses mainly on Reason 4, but Ableton live is also touched on. Throughout the course topics such as Beat structuring, use of plugin’s, sequencing and FX will be covered, and on completion of the workshops, students should have a number of tracks that they have made.

Workshops are now being conducted at a new location, Shelter a brand new venue which is located in al Quoz. Aswell as this the workshops are also conducted at the OHM Records store in Karama.

OHM also has the backing of some top international DJ’s, and so far Jazzy B the founder of Soul II Soul, and Ashley Beedle from X-PRESS 2 have both dropped in to give their opinion’s on what makes a good DJ and Producer and to give an incite into the music industry. Through out the courses many more international DJs and Producers will be dropping in to share their experiences with the students.

At the end of each course there will be a competition in which students will be given the chance to win Ohm Records vouchers and various other prizes. In addition to this Ohm Records is also going to act as a suitable platform for entry into the music industry. If there are suitable students on the DJ course that are over the age of 21, they will get the opportunity to play in a local club or even warm up for an top international DJ. Suitable students on the Production course will be given the opportunity for full exposure of their tracks within the local media and radio.

The current students at OHM Workshops, who are set to have a major impact on the local scene, are now firmly settled into their courses. Most of the students have now hit the half point and they have a few comments to share about the courses:

“I am a banker who has always dreamt of being a DJ (even if it's for part-time). The DJ workshop has given me an opportunity to follow my passion. Dan and his team are taking me step-by-step through the whole process. Dan is making sure that I understand and get familiar with the fundamentals of music and mixing. I have learned the basic of mixing music and it's a lot of fun although at times a bit frustrating. This workshop is not a short cut to becoming a DJ however with dedication and extra hours I may be able fulfill my dream soon!”

“Taking the production course at Ohm has enabled me to listen to music in a much more educated and discerning way. The Reason software is fairly easy to understand and your own creations can take shape quite quickly, even after a couple of lessons.  You have to put your own time into practicing and getting to know the software but with the friendly guys at Ohm always on hand to answer questions outside of lesson time then progress has been very good.  I’ve listened to house music for about 16 years and now I can make my own!”
